Storms can cause a lot of damage to your roof. Part of your roof's job is to protect your house. But, once it has been damaged, you need to make sure that you are working on getting it repaired as quickly as possible. You don't want to leave the damage there for longer than necessary because you don't want your house to get more damage. When you are working on getting your roof repaired, there are some things that you have to do first.

Homeowner's Insurance

The first thing you need to do is to call your homeowner's insurance agent and talk to them. There are a few things that you need to talk to them about. One is that they may have to have an adjuster come to your house to check out the roof before anything happens. You also want to find out if there are roofers that your insurance prefers to work with. If there are preferred roofing contractors, make sure that you contact them and have one of their roofers come to check out your roof.

Evaluation

The first thing that the roofing contractor is going to do is evaluate your roof. They are going to need to see how extensive the damage is and what needs to happen in order to make your roof solid again. If there are a lot of people who need to have roof work done, the roofing contractors may have to triage the roofs by the extent of the damage. The roofs that have more damage are more likely to get repaired first, so it's important to make sure that the roofers are checking out the damage.

Temporary Coverage

Depending on how much damage you have, the roofer may do some kind of temporary coverage on your roof to help protect your house and keep more damage from happening. That can include putting tarps down on your roof so that water will run off the tarps instead of going into any holes in your roof. The roofer will make sure that the tarps are secured down to your roof so that they aren't blown off in the wind.

Storms happen. And in strong storms, damage happens. If you have storm damage to your roof, you want to make sure that you are following all the necessary steps to get it repaired.
